Robin Hood Movie Review

Category : Action

When Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe announced that they were going to make a new Robin Hood movie I was excited.  The last time that the dynamic duo came together they produced the epic Gladiator movie, so naturally when news of this movie came to light I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck rising.

Just in case you don’t know the story of Robin Hood I will fill you in, Robin Hood is a story about a menacing archer who fights for the rights of the poor villagers against the evil and greedy king of England, however this story of Robin Hood is a little different and is more about Robin fighting against the French rather than the English.

This origin movie however is a little slow, and fans of Gladiator might at times think that they were watching a movie from a different director.  Sure the texture of a Ridley Scott movie is here and so is the acting talent and clever dialogue however from a Robin Hood movie you would expect a fast paced action packed beast of a movie instead we are given a slow paced turtle.

Having said all of the above you would expect me to give this movie a bad rating, but it’s really not that bad in fact if you are patient enough this movie is worth taking a look at, maybe not in the cinema though.  The reason for this is that the finale fight scene in this movie that everything builds up to is a real let down.

Overall this movie gets 3 out of 5 stars from me.

Repo Men Movie Review

Category : Action

After all of the action in Sherlock Holmes it seems that Jude Law isn’t happy to return to his romantic comedy ways just yet, and that isn’t a bad thing.  Repo men is set in the not too distant future where you will face deadly consequences for not keeping up with your debt repayments, thankfully for me we aren’t at this moment in the future as of yet because I would surely be missing a few of my body parts, just kidding of course.

Remy (Law) and Jake (Whitaker) are two repo men who work for a company called The Union.  The union are a massive global company who have developed some advanced mechanical internal organs, unfortunately these advanced organs don’t come free on the NHS and they pack a hefty price tag.  Not to worry though The Union offer very affordable price plans, but if for whatever reason you fall behind on your payments then you had better watch out, because the Repo Men will come for you and they will take back what is rightfully theirs.

As you may have worked out about now these repo men aren’t trained surgeons they are simply futuristic debt collectors, and we all know how friendly and skilled these people are.

Remy and Jake work together to take back the companies property however when an event leaves Remy for dead the company replace his heart with a new mechanical device, because of this Remy now knows what life is like on the other side of the fence, and because he also has a price to pay back o the union he begins to struggle with his job, this then means that he starts to fail to pay his repayments.

Remy decides that he isn’t going down without a fight and soon teams up with another transplanted victim who has learned to avoid capture.

Overall don’t expect too much of a story or deep character development because there practically isn’t any, however this isn’t a bad thing because this movie doesn’t pretend to be something that it is not, instead it is an all out action film sprinkled with blood and guts.  Jude Law does surprisingly well to carry this movie and maybe a little bit of Robert Downey has rubbed off on him.

This fun action flick gets a cool 3 out of 5 stars.

Iron Man 2 Movie Review

Category : Action, Comic Book, Super Hero

Iron Man is back, and this is the review you have been waiting for.  The world now knows that Tony Stark is the metal costumed superhero crime fighter.  The government want the suits technology however tony constantly tells them that he can’t have it.  The government aren’t the only ones that are after the Iron Man though.  Bad guys played by Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke are soon on the case wanting to shelve Iron Man for good.

Sequels of movie franchises are seldom the best and often fizzle or bang for all the wrong reasons.  Fans of the first movie or comic book to movie fans can rest assured however as Iron Man 2 is much better than the original.  There is something in this movie for everyone.  There’s action and plenty of it, just as you would expect from a superhero movie.  The comedy levels are amped up this time around with Robert Downey Jnr being allowed to flex his charisma and charm at every turn.  There is also a lot more eye candy this time around, with the introduction of Scarlett Johansson, need I say any more?

Iron Man 2 is one of the better superhero movies to have it our screens, however it is still going to be compared to the Dark knight and sadly Iron Man 2 can’t compete with the dark and brooding superhero from Gotham, however in my opinion they can’t be compared as they are two completely different types of movies.  The Dark Knight is more of a serious superhero movie where as Iron Man 2 is a more family friendly movie experience.

If you are a comic book fan or a fan of the first movie then you are going to watch this movie, it doesn’t matter what I say to you, however if you are unaware of the first movie or never fancied watching it before then I urge you to check out the first movie, once you have done so get your butt down to your local cinema, get the biggest bag of popcorn that money can buy and sit back and enjoy the show.

Iron Man 2 gets a solid 4 out of 5 stars and I am really looking forward to the third in the series.

Angels and Demons Movie Review

Category : Action, Thriller

Tom Hanks is back as reprises his role as the Harvard Symbolist Robert Langdon. This time Langdon has been called in to help the Catholic Church. The movie starts off inside CERN (big bang machine) where anti matter has just been created, this anti matter is being called the ‘God’ Particle so naturally the church isn’t going to like this. So when terrorists brake into the CERN’s facility and plan to use this antimatter to blow up the Vatican City the Vatican reluctantly ask for Robert Langdon’s help to stop the terrorists on time.

These terrorists are later to be found out to be a group called the ‘Illuminati’ one of the churches biggest enemy apart from science that is. The Illuminati plan to explode this god particle on the same day that the College of Cardinals meet up and have a cup of tea and also select a new pope.

Angels and Demons then becomes a race against the clock for Robert Langdon as he races around the Vatican City solving puzzles and even going on site seeing tours to find the god particle before it explodes and takes all the College of Cardinals with it. Even though Angels and Demons is a long movie it never feels boring or slow at any point and there’s always something on screen that will keep you as the viewer interested.

Some people may complain the characters in this movie are wafer thin and I’m not going to dispute that, however we are watching a movie about a man trying to stop a bomb from wiping out an entire city, obviously there’s not going to be a lot of character development as if this was a real story I can imagine the person would be running around like a headless chicken trying to find the bomb rather than taking time to explain how to get to the next point to uncover the next clue. Others may also complain that the book was better, well maybe it was I’ve never read it but unlike the book this movie will only take a couple of hours to watch.

Angels and Demons is worth watching but just don’t expect something spectacular because it’s not, it his however an escape from reality where science and religion go head to head and the story that comes out of it is pretty interesting. I enjoyed angels and demons and give it a religiously solid 3 out of 5 stars.

12 Rounds Latest Movie Review

Category : Action

After the rubbish that was the ‘Marine’ which also starred Cena, I wasn’t expecting much other than complete garbage, but I choose to go and see this movie anyway so I can give you the verdict on the WWE’s leading man John Cena’s new movie 12 Rounds.

When I first heard of 12 rounds and who was init I thought “ah rite this is going to be another ‘Rocky’ rip off” however I was wrong. The story follows a young cop who then gets promoted to detective; however that’s another story i will leave for later. Detective Fisher (Cena) is placed in the middle of a cat and mouse game after a known drug smuggler holds him responsible for the death of his wife. If Fisher is to pass each one of these rounds then he will get back his wife unharmed who has been abducted by this drug smuggler, however if he fails, she’s brown bread aka Dead.

Already I have heard this movie being called the ‘Die hard’ for a new generation, however I think this is totally unfair to the old action classic as it doesn’t have the same magical feeling to it. Just like in the Marine Cena doesn’t seem to have the acting chops well to act and some of the early scenes are very uncomfortable to watch, however thankfully in this instance the acting takes a backseat to the action, which is fun to watch and a relief from watching Cena try to act.

The whole movie is based around Cena’s character and his onscreen wife Molly who is abducted, however due to Cena’s acting and the rubbish script there is no chemistry between the two characters on screen. Molly also comes off as annoying and she is equally as painful to watch as Cena’s acting, which begs you the question do we actually care if the bad guy kills her? In this instance no he would actually be doing us a favour.

Having said all of the above this movie is about action, fight scenes and car chases and on those accounts the movie does deliver, not in a way the classic die hard franchise did but nonetheless it still delivers. So if you have some spare time and want to escape the real world, turn your brain off and enjoy a high octane, explosion filled action movie I recommend you watching 12 rounds.

12 rounds is awarded an explosive 3 out of 5 stars, and is worth watching if you’re an action fan, however if you want to watch a real classic I suggest you rent any of the original die hard movies.
