Harry Brown is set in a modern day Britain where teenage violence runs havoc. We follow a one man journey through living on a tough council estate which is plagued by these young menaces. It is rumoured that in order to get his wife to see Harry Brown that Michael Caine told his wife that this movie was like “Mary Poppins”, rest assured this movie is nothing like Mary Poppins.
Harry Brown is a down and gritty modern day movie which has more truth to it than most films get close to. In many aspects this movie is the British version of Gran Torino, Both movies star disgruntled old men who take revenge on those causing so much pain and suffering to those around them, However Harry Brown is much more violent.
Forget the fancy set pieces and forget witty one liners, Harry Brown takes a risk and throws these important factors out the window which are usually used in a successful movie however Harry Brown takes the risk and succeeds. The movie hammers home a lot of truth about modern Britain which at times is very scary to watch, however with pensioners out there like Harry Brown we surely have nothing to worry about.
Michael Caine makes this movie, without him it would be a typical British film about gang violence without any real substance to it. Watching Michael Caine transform from a quiet old aged chess playing pensioner to an old age Rambo is a joy to watch. Overall this movie was an excellent movie experience.
I award Harry Brown with 4 out of 5 stars.
